A Fall Recap

Over the past month, our school has been bustling with PTSA-supported events and initiatives. From our first ever Harvest Festival, to our Winter Clothing & Ski Swap—a firm community favorite—our social calendar has been bursting at the seams!

Here’s a quick recap:

Harvest Festival | October 27th, 2024

Our first ever Harvest Festival was a huge success! Hundreds of families enjoyed pizza, snacks and drinks while stopping by one of our many activity stations. From face painting to pumpkin decorating, pressing your own cider to…of course… enjoying ALL the treats, it was such a wonderful afternoon building community through celebration.

The hope is that we can make this an annual event! Thank you so much to everyone who supported through their attendance, and to all our amazing volunteers who helped make it happen.

Ridwell Plastic Film Recycling Drive | November 1st, 2024

In October, our E-STEM Committee volunteers organized a one-time plastic film recycling drive through Ridwell. Families were asked to collect thin plastic film items including produce bags, plastic mailers, and bubble wrap, and bring them to school on November 1st.

We had a fantastic response to our call to action, collecting bags and bags of… bags!! Big thanks to everyone who participated, and to the volunteers who helped oversee the drop-off station. On November 6th, our plastic film donation headed off to begin its transformation into Trex decking planks!

If keeping recyclables out of landfills is something you’re really passionate about, please consider supporting our campaign further by becoming a Ridwell member. They collect hundreds of common household items you can’t recycle curbside, like plastic food packaging, lightbulbs, clothes, and Styrofoam. Sign up through get.ridwell.com/hwk8 by December 15th and your membership will count toward rewards for our school. When 10 families sign up, our school earns plastic film pickup all spring. And when 20 families join, our school earns a field trip to the Ridwell warehouse!

Winter Clothing and Ski Swap | November 2nd, 2024

Our annual Winter Clothing and Ski Swap is a firm favorite on the fall calendar, not only among our school community but with winter (and winter sport) fans across Seattle. We’ve even had people traveling from as far as Bellingham to browse and purchase gear in the past!

The goal of this public event is to help families get outfitted for winter while also raising money for our school. It features gently-used winter apparel and ski/snowboard gear as well as new apparel and gear to purchase, courtesy of Hazel Wolf family-owned Dusty’s Ski Shop.

2024 was our best year by far, nearly doubling the dollar amount sold in 2023. We also raised the largest amount for our PTSA in the three years we’ve held this event. Huge thanks to all who participated, and to all who volunteered their time to help make it happen!

“I had a great time… and loved seeing so many Hazel Wolf families, and others from the surrounding communities, come to the event. Here’s hoping for a great ski season and warm families!” Michael Heys, Hazel Wolf parent & Event Lead

Coming up…

You’d be forgiven for thinking your friendly PTSA committee members and volunteers will now be putting their feet up and taking a well-earned break – but no! This busy season is set to continue, as we look ahead to our 2024-2025 Blue Envelope Campaign direct appeal fundraiser, the second ADHD Parent Support Group meeting of the school year (Thursday, Nov. 14th, 4-6pm, Library), the return of our popular K-5 Family Movie Night (Friday, Nov. 15th, 6:30-8:30pm, Cafetorium), and another amazing community recycling initiative – this time with TerraCycle, a global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials.

Be sure to stay connected with us via whichever platforms work for you, to keep updated. And, if you’d like to get involved with any of the activities, events, and projects this year, reach out to volunteer!
