Welcome to the Hazel Wolf K-8 2020-21 School Year, Pandemic Edition!

As we write this letter to you, our community, we are struck with sheer awe of this moment in history we all are experiencing together.

These times are challenging, anxiety provoking, frustrating and fear filled. And yet, they also are exciting because they provide an opportunity to reimagine how best to serve and engage our community in meaningful, helpful and equitable ways. We ALL are in this moment together—and it surely will imprint upon us and our families in more significant ways than the “business as usual” of years past.

With this in mind, as your new PTSA leadership for the year, we are focused on the things that matter: Community, Connection, Collaboration, and Communication

Our Hazel Wolf COMMUNITY is all together on this “pandemic parenting” ride—we want to support all of our kids in any way we can to bolster their remote learning, their social-emotional health, remove access barriers, and work with each other to ensure needs are met. This unique inflection point in time offers us the opportunity to build our community even stronger—by engaging deeply in anti-racism with the continued powerful work of our Racial Equity Committee, and by establishing a Family Engagement and Action Team to ensure everyone has a voice, can be actively involved in the community and supported in their student’s learning.

We plan to facilitate CONNECTION between the PTSA, our families, our students and our staff—finding ways we can lean in and help stay tethered to each other, even while we have to be apart. We are working hard to provide virtual student affinity groups and clubs, grade band parent community and support groups, virtual school meetings and educational sessions to support each other as we navigate this new world through community-sourced skill sets and resources. Creating spaces for us to connect and being in service to one another, is going to be more important now than ever.

We intend to provide more opportunities for robust COLLABORATION within our community of warm, creative, and brilliant families. We know we are all better together. By collaborating and sharing the myriad ways to support our kids, our staff and each other in this moment, we will arrive on the other side of this pandemic a much stronger Hazel Wolf.

Finally, we want to ensure clear and consistent COMMUNICATION, which is critical in this moment of constant change and upheaval. To this end, we will be streamlining our communications, increasing the frequency of updates, providing more user-friendly platforms and ensuring messages are accessible to ALL families (including our ELL community). We will be creating more opportunities for folks to contribute content, soliciting student-created content, and ensuring we have feedback mechanisms around our communications approaches, so that we can continuously respond and refine.

We will host our first general session virtually this year on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30pm, where we will share our plans and investments/commitments to our community for the next few months. We look forward to seeing you all there virtually—and are eagerly looking forward to the time when we can once again gather in person, as a community.

This year, we are building the proverbial plane while we are flying it; so we ask for grace—for ourselves, for you, for your kids, for others, and especially for our hardworking staff. As the year unfolds and evolves, we will continue to adjust our budgets and plans, and reach out for additional support where needed.
